RENOVATION OF THE WATERWORKS AT TEMPELHOF AIRPORT

Deep beneath the airport building lies a technical monument: the old waterworks. The entire facility must be modernized for preventive fire protection.

In the shadow of the imposing airport building and deep underground lies a special engineering marvel: the old waterworks, which once supplied large parts of Berlin with precious drinking water. Today, the waterworks and the entire water network at the site must be modernized for preventive fire protection. The renovation includes three deep wells, five fire water pumps, compressed air water tanks, well water filters, and the entire fire water pipeline at the site.

Technical monument at Tempelhof Airport

Like many facilities on the airport grounds, the waterworks also has the status of a technical monument – which makes the renovation a particularly interesting and challenging project. One focus of the work is on the two underground, ring-shaped clean water tanks from the first construction phase of the airport. These seven-meter-high reinforced concrete tanks are being thoroughly inspected and restored. The concrete surfaces will be carefully inspected, damage repaired, and a special epoxy resin coating suitable for food and drinking water applied to protect the concrete from mechanical and chemical influences.

The renovation program is being supplemented by the securing of the pump systems and pipe shafts. In addition, the modernization of a machine room is also essential for water supply and distribution.
