Renovation and Reinforcement of the Steel Structure
The steel structure of the passenger concourse and hangars forms the airport’s 1.2-kilometer-long semicircle between the West and East terminal buildings, with Building B, which houses the main hall, connecting to the center of this structure. The structure is an engineering masterpiece of its time and a distinctive feature of the building complex. Its high heritage value is beyond question.
Renovation and Reinforcement of the Steel Support Structure
The main structure consists of a steel frame with 15-meter-high main columns, rear columns integrated into the window facade, and trusses cantilevering a total of 40 meters. Together, these elements span a vast column-free space that allows for a wide range of uses. Comprehensive renovation and reinforcement of the steel structure is essential to ensure that it remains suitable for these uses in the future. This is the second key project undertaken as part of the renovation of THF.
In 2025, Tempelhof Projekt GmbH completed the procurement process and awarded a corresponding design contract, the first phase of which focuses on the 380-meter-long passenger concourse. Work began here at the end of 2025 with a comprehensive damage and condition assessment of the steel structure, which forms the basis for the analysis of design options and the subsequent development of the specific design solution for the renovation and reinforcement of this unique steel structure.
