The exhibition "Lufthansa. Berlin-Tempelhof 1926–1945. Between Civilian and Military Aviation“explores the history of Lufthansa at its former home airport from 1926 to 1945, taking a critical look at the company’s early years. It focuses on the complex interconnections between aviation, the state, industry, and the military – from the fascination of aviation and the development of a clandestine air force to Lufthansa’s role in armaments production, including the use of forced labor at Tempelhof Airport. The exhibition at the THF TOWER opens on May 28, 2026.
Lufthansa in Tempelhof: Between Civil and Military Aviation
The exhibition “Lufthansa. Berlin-Tempelhof 1926–1945” at the THF TOWER traces the history of Lufthansa from its founding to its temporary dissolution after World War II. During this period, Tempelhof, located in the heart of Berlin, served as the company’s home airport. From here, it rose to become one of the most important airlines in Europe and the world.
The company’s development is closely linked to the history of aviation as well as to the economic and military contexts of the Weimar Republic and National Socialism. The exhibition therefore also addresses Lufthansa’s role in the reconstruction of the German Air Force and the use of forced labor during World War II.
Finally, it takes a critical look at the company as it was reestablished in the 1950s, shedding light on personnel continuity from the Nazi era and the company’s handling of its past.
Historical documents and original film footage
The exhibition features around 200 images, including photographs, posters, postcards, and historical documents. Original film footage from the period brings the story to life. A specially developed animation illustrates the evolution of Lufthansa’s global route network from its origins up to 1945.
THF TOWER: Experience the 6th floor as part of the exhibition
The location itself becomes part of the experience: from the 6th floor of THF TOWER, visitors can enjoy sweeping views over Tempelhof Airport and Tempelhof Field. Large-scale window banners connect today’s perspective with the site’s historical development, making the past visible quite literally.
The exhibition concludes with a critical look at the postwar period, highlighting personnel continuities from the NS era and how historical responsibility has been addressed.
The exhibition is complemented by a diverse program of accompanying events and educational activities, including workshops for school classes and families. For younger visitors, an activity booklet is available, guiding them through the exhibition in an engaging, interactive way.
