Floating University
The rainwater retention basin was built in 1938 as part of the airport's technical infrastructure to collect rainwater from the airport grounds and neighboring streets and divert it into the Landwehr Canal. After the airport closed in 2008, the basin was cleaned and maintained less frequently, allowing sediments to accumulate. As a result, plants, insects, birds, mammals, and amphibians settled in and around the basin, developing a wetland ecosystem.
Nature and culture education venue meets technical infrastructure
Building on the technical infrastructure and in harmony with the grown ecosystem, the Floating University Berlin has developed into a popular and award-winning nature culture learning center since 2018. Behind the project is the Floating e. V. association, which has set itself the goal of opening up the rainwater retention basin to the urban population and discussing topics such as the urban climate, urban resources, and water cycles in transdisciplinary, artistic, and community programs. The experimental architecture, the diverse program, and, last but not least, the architecture awards it has won make the “Floating” a cultural and social learning location known beyond the city limits.
At the beginning of 2024, a Letter of Intent, was negotiated between the Senate Department for Urban Development, Construction, and Housing, Tempelhof Projekt GmbH, and Floating e.V. to put the cooperation between all parties on a firm footing. In addition, a joint process is to be initiated to transform the rainwater retention basin into an urban development project for sustainable rainwater management that will serve as a model and inspiration for the district and Berlin. As part of the Technical Infrastructure 2030 project, the basin is to be converted into a seepage area. In addition to the planning and implementation of this renovation project, the cooperative development of the basin and its possible uses is to be continued.
