The Tempelhof airport today

Unlike almost any other place in Europe, the building of the former airport in Tempelhof stands for an eventful and multi-layered past. From the dark national socialist era, which manifested itself with the construction of the building from 1936, to the essential importance of the site in the context of U.S. use during the "airlift" in 1948, to the regular air traffic in post-war West Berlin: Tempelhof is more than an architectural monument and landmark – today, the building is a legendary symbol of hope and freedom.

The city of Berlin is facing the challenging task of preserving the historical significance of this protected and iconic building, while opening it up and developing it in an innovative and economically sensible way.

On the way to becoming a creative location, the former Tempelhof airport will be successively revitalized, supplemented with new offerings and sustainably transformed for future generations.
