Renovation
Since 2011, Tempelhof Projekt GmbH has been responsible for the subsequent use and development of the Tempelhof airport on behalf of the State of Berlin. Initially, this involved the entire Tempelhof Field, including the airport building. After the 2014 referendum, this responsibility was limited to the building and the directly adjacent areas, such as the apron.
Parallel to the use of the airport as an emergency shelter for refugees during the refugee crisis, the focus was already on the overall renovation of the building. The basic evaluation required needed to put the building to a new use in the coming decades, began in 2018.
The preliminary result of the still ongoing basic evaluation is a huge need for renovation of almost all surfaces, the facades and roofs, the supporting structure and the technical infrastructure. Despite the existing limitations of the structure, in Summer 2020 the Senate decided to develop the site in accordance with the „Vision 2030+“, to increase the potential of the site. They were well aware that the renovation is a generational task.
