Aviation Center of the German Museum of Technology

The aviation collection of the German Museum of Technology Foundation comprises the world's largest stock of historic German aircrafts and of commercial aircraft built in Germany. The architectural firm Gerkan, Marg und Partner (gmp) has drawn up a concept for the future use of Hangar 6 as a "center for air traffic" at the Tempelhof airport, where it plans to present the history and future of civil aviation in an exhibition area that can be used all year round. The exhibition area of about 8,000m² will be used to show the development of air traffic up to the present day, its possible future development and the resulting consequences. Numerous aircrafts as well as large and small exhibits from the collection of the German Museum of Technology Foundation, which are currently stored or being restored, could be made accessible to the public for the first time in Hangar 6. For this purpose, the entire hangar will be used.

The plan is to separate the hangar and the building by means of a hangar-high glass facade in support level. Up to 30 aircrafts are to be exhibited in the hangar itself. Three historic aircrafts of the German Museum of Technology are already on the apron and in the hangars of the Tempelhof airport. The "Hangar 6 / Aviation Center" concept aims to revitalize the site by offering activities for children, young people and other visitor groups in the form of workshops, guided tours, hands-on activities and other interactive formats. There are also plans to use the hangar as an event area and to set up a glass restoration workshop.
